About the JSA/JLab Graduate Fellowship Program
The JSA/JLab Graduate Fellowship Program is funded by the JSA Initiatives Fund. JSA will award fellowships to qualified doctoral students at SURA member universities, for research related to Jefferson Lab in Newport News, Virginia. For AY2024-25, each fellowship will provide the awardee’s home institution with a $12,000 stipend. The awardee’s home institution must agree to provide the remaining research assistant stipend from institutional or research funds. The Graduate Fellowship Program contributes to the nation’s commitment to grow our future science leaders and researchers by providing the environment, financial resources, and collaboration opportunities for graduate students to work alongside Jefferson researchers as they continue their academic studies.
Eligibility
Eligible students must be enrolled full-time in a relevant doctoral program at a SURA member university. Awardees may not concurrently hold another major full-time fellowship or internship. Students may apply at any stage of their graduate careers or while undergraduate seniors. Awards are limited to two years. Students seeking second-year support must resubmit an application.
Evaluation Criteria and Process
A selection committee will read and evaluate applications and make recommendations for award of AY2024-25 fellowships to qualified students who meet the following criteria. JSA may consider other information if necessary to ensure a fair and objective evaluation process.
- Merit and quality of proposed research based on applicant’s research plan
- Utility and relevance of proposed research to Jefferson Lab, including proposed utilization of Lab resources
- Likelihood that proposed research objectives can be accomplished by graduation
- Academic qualifications from transcripts
- Letters of recommendation
- Overall completeness of application package
Instructions to Student Applicants
Download application form to submit with proposal. See the application form for instructions regarding supporting materials. Submit application packages via email to jlab_committee@sura.org, with subject line: “JSA Graduate Fellowships” by the announced deadline.
Download the reference form and provide to three individuals for letters of recommendation. JSA will notify applicant when a reference is received. All letters of recommendation must be received by the announced deadline. Submit to jlab_committee@sura.org, with subject line: “JSA Graduate Fellowships.”
