About the JSA/JLab Sabbatical/Research Leave Support Program
First established by the SURA Board of Trustees in 1997, this Program provides support for faculty from universities conducting research at Jefferson Lab during approved sabbatical leave from their home institutions. The AY2024-25 Program will provide a monthly $1,500 stipend for up to six months to defray expenses for researchers during their sabbaticals at the Lab. Preference is given for nominations from SURA member universities.

Eligibility
Applicants must be regular, tenured or non-tenured, faculty from a university associated with Jefferson Lab. Applicants should provide the approval of their home institutions for sabbatical or research leave for the period for which JSA support is requested. Individuals are limited to one award in a five-year period. Faculty members who are retired or retiring, seeking only summer support, hold a Jefferson Lab joint appointment, or living within 50 miles of the Lab are not eligible for JSA sabbatical support awards.

Evaluation Criteria and Process
JSA will evaluate eligible applications and make its decision for award of Sabbatical and Research Leave Support considering the following criteria. JSA may consider other information if necessary to ensure a fair and objective evaluation process.

Merit and quality of proposed research and its contribution to the research programs of the Lab, including programs in nuclear and particle physics, accelerator physics, and other Jefferson Lab related research
Utility or relevance of proposed research to Jefferson Lab and effectiveness of the proposed utilization of Lab facilities and resources
Likelihood that the proposed objectives will be accomplished during award period
Recommendations from professional references

Instructions to Applicants
Download application form to submit with proposal. Submit application packages via email to jlab_committee@sura.org, with subject line: “JSA Sabbatical Support” by the announced deadline. Support for awards made for this period may begin as early as summer 2024. Upon request from awardee, JSA may consider modifying start and end dates as it deems reasonable to align with the awardee’s sabbatical at Jefferson Lab.
